Empowering Families Through the Shift from NDIS to Thriving Kids

Empowering Families Through the Shift from NDIS to Thriving Kids

The Australian Government has announced Thriving Kids, a new program designed to support children with autism or developmental delays. Beginning in July 2026 and continuing through July 2027, children in these categories will gradually transition out of the NDIS and into this new initiative. The move is part of wider reforms intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the NDIS, which is projected to exceed $52 billion in costs by 2025–26.

What’s Changing

According to Disability Minister Mark Butler, the NDIS was not originally intended to deliver tailored support for children with autism or developmental delays. Thriving Kids aims to fill this gap by providing a specialised pathway better suited to developmental needs, while also easing financial pressures on the broader scheme.

What This Means for Families

The shift will directly affect thousands of families who rely on NDIS supports for daily care and therapy. For many, the next few years will involve:

  • Reassessing care plans: Families will need to review their current supports and how these may translate under Thriving Kids.

  • Navigating new eligibility criteria: As children move into the program, assessments may be required to determine the most appropriate services.

  • Adjusting to new systems and providers: Transition periods often involve administrative change, with families needing clear guidance to avoid disruption.

Why the Transition Matters

While the reforms are designed to strengthen disability support for the long term, the practical impacts on families will depend heavily on how the rollout is managed. Continuity of services, clear communication, and accessible guidance will be essential to avoid gaps in care.

Looking Ahead

Between now and 2026, there is an opportunity for providers, families, and government to work together to prepare for a smooth transition. Clear information and early planning will be key to minimising uncertainty and supporting children’s development.

At Cappsule, we are focused on creating digital health tools that help families maintain stability in times of change. One area we’re working on is medication adherence, ensuring daily routines remain consistent as programs and supports evolve.
